The Great Oaks (GO) Charter School – Wilmington opened in downtown Wilmington in the fall of 2015. This school year, Great Oaks – Wilmington serves 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. In the 2021-2022 school year, Great Oaks added 12th grade to its enrollment, celebrating its first-ever graduating high school class. Great Oaks provides a unique structure of support for its students. Students receive daily individualized instruction from an AmeriCorps tutor to supplement their classroom learning. This commitment to mentorship and individualized learning helps Great Oaks students reach their maximum potential.

Position Summary

Great Oaks Charter School – Wilmington is seeking a student-centered, flexible, committed professional to fill the role of the full-time in-house substitute teacher. Substitute teachers will work on-site as Great Oaks students return to in-person learning. The substitute teacher will step in for teachers who are out of the building as needed and follow prescribed lesson plans to ensure the continuity of student learning. They will also be called up to assist with school operations as needed.


Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Follow lesson plans provided by the regular Teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students
  • Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment
  • Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student
  • Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground, and in the cafeteria
  • Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan
  • Fulfill student support functions such as small group instruction or lunch supervision
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required
  • Associates degree, preferred
  • A willingness and ability to work in person (COVID-19 precautions will be taken by the school to ensure health and safety)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A track record of success in building relationships with youth
  • A strong belief that all students can succeed
  • A do-whatever-it-takes attitude

Compensation

Position Summary: 

Great teachers are at the heart of what we do and are the key to our students’ college success. The Special Education Teacher is responsible for ensuring every student at Great Oaks is supported in their academic development. This teacher will be responsible for maintaining records for students with special needs, participating in IEP implementation and evaluation, co-teaching, scheduling services, and will be responsible for ensuring students with disabilities receive the proper accommodations within the classroom and during tutorial sessions. This teacher will work closely with classroom teachers to develop assessments that are aligned with the Common Core standards, analyze student results, and work with teachers to make data-driven curricular decisions. All teachers will also take on additional responsibilities around the school such as advisory, lunch duty, enrichment classes, and activities. Our most successful teachers are those who operate with a team mindset – we are all in this work together and it will take each and every one of us to achieve college success for our students.


Key responsibilities include:

Ensure the school is meeting the needs of all students by:

  • Ensuring all general education teachers and tutors know and understand the needs of their students with disabilities and appropriate accommodations/modifications to use
  • Reviewing the needs of incoming students and monitoring student progress
  • Building relationships with and maintaining consistent communications with families and students regarding student progress

Plan a rigorous curriculum and deliver strong instruction by:

  • Demonstrating solid knowledge and understanding of the content matter
  • Using instructional strategies which are academically rigorous and highly engaging
  • Implementing research-based curricula with fidelity

Contribute to the creation of a data-driven culture by:

  • Tracking and analyzing student data both publicly and internally to identify learning needs
  • Using student achievement data to set ambitious goals for the students
  • Collaborating with other teachers to differentiate curriculum based on assessment data and student need

Maintain strong classroom and school culture by:

  • Clearly and consistently communicating and upholding school rules, values, and expectations in and out of the classroom
  • Setting an urgent, respectful, and positive tone in the classroom
  • Displaying extraordinary time management to maximize student learning
  • Building relationships with students that communicate the importance of college success and your belief that they will succeed
  • Building a collaborative, respectful advisory classroom community
  • Taking on responsibilities outside of their content areas instruction such as advisory, lunch duty, enrichment classes, and after-school activities

Competencies and Qualifications

The successful candidate will have proven success in implementing high-quality instruction which led to the improvement of student achievement in an urban school. S/he/they will possess exceptional relationship-building skills and the ability to communicate clearly to multiple stakeholders. The successful candidate will also have:

  • A strong academic record with a Bachelor’s degree from a competitive college or university is required; advanced degree in the subject area preferred
  • At least two years of experience improving student achievement at an urban school
  • State teaching certification in Special Education
  • Extremely strong classroom management abilities
  • A strong belief that all students can succeed
  • A do-whatever-it-takes attitude including a willingness to work occasionally on the weekend or in the evening
  • An exceptional ability to respond well to feedback and implement it immediately
