At Great Oaks Charter School in Wilmington, we strive to cultivate a joyful learning atmosphere, and our students enjoy a variety of extracurricular activities, including a championship basketball team.
To provide the best access to services for our students and community, we are located in the heart of our city in the Community Education Building (CEB). Our eleven-story building was converted into a world-class education facility thanks to the generosity of Bank of America and the Longwood Foundation. The 281,000 square-foot facility has a cafeteria, library, music and dance rooms, an indoor play area, and health and wellness service facilities.
Our Mission
We work to create a safe, effective, and innovative learning environment that enables everyone to reach his or her greatest potential through a high dosage of mentorship.

Core Values
Students First – Our students are the reason we exist. Each staff member is responsible for our students’ success. Our students’ futures are at stake – we never give up. All our decisions and actions are centered on students.
Straight Talk – We face reality, communicate honestly and respectfully, and hold each other accountable.
We Grow – We know that we are not perfect. We are open to feedback, ask for help, and strive to develop ourselves in our roles to be successful for our students, families, and staff.
Model Excellence – We consistently uphold school-wide expectations. Every day we are in the spotlight, and we always model professionalism. We assume the best and treat one another with respect.
One Team – We are in this together. Even when we don’t see eye to eye, we support each other to reach our goals and do what’s best for our students. We do more with less. If it doesn’t work, we fix it. We find a way.
Joy & Humor – We like to have fun. We love to laugh. We believe a positive atmosphere helps us achieve more.

We proudly host a corps of AmeriCorps Members, completing a year of service as part of our Education Fellows. The Ed Fellows is a selective group of recent college graduates serving our students as academic tutors and mentors. Many of these individuals remain in the same cities where they work after their year of service, which positively impacts our schools and communities for years to come.
We believe in the power of a high-quality teacher and we are committed to increasing the size, quality, and diversity of our own teaching staff. With that in mind, we partner with Relay Graduate School of Education to create a pipeline for high-performing Education Fellows to receive their Masters of Art in Teaching through Relay’s Delaware campus.
In Partnership with Summer Collab, Great Oaks works to reverse the summer slide. Summer Collab trains Great Oaks staff to lead amazing STEAM summer programs, keeping our students active and learning even when school is out.
Great Oaks partners with the YMCA of Delaware to provide recreational space for students. This partnership helps Great Oaks offer students enrichment opportunities in sports and arts.

“I was scared when I came here late in the year because my school closed. I didn’t want to come, but within two weeks I learned that we are a family here at Great Oaks. The staff here push me outside of my academic comfort zone, and when I make mistakes they always support me through it and I grow. I feel a connection to every staff member, and they have taught me something: to become a better version of me.” – Keyon Cooper
